August 2026
Wisdom, Devotion, and Community Compassion
Published 31 August 2026
August brought an inspiring discourse on the Gita and sanskar, three days of Vara Mahalakshmi vrat with samuhika Lakshmi Ashtottara and kumkuma archane, a special vigil for Nepal flood relief, and a save-the-date for Krishna Janmashtami.
A month of learning, devotion, and seva
August 2026 has been a spiritually rich and community-minded month at Oxford Hindu Mandir. Devotees gathered for an uplifting discourse on the Bhagavad Gita, celebrated Vara Mahalakshmi vrat together over three days, and came together for a special vigil in support of those affected by devastating floods in Nepal.
Alongside these special programmes, the mandir continued its rhythm of daily aaratis, monthly havan, and growing participation from families across Oxfordshire. Each gathering has strengthened the sense that the mandir is not only a place of worship, but a living centre of culture, compassion, and shared faith.

The Gita for Today's World
On 4 August 2026, devotees gathered at the mandir for a special discourse entitled The Gita for Today's World, delivered by Srimati Renuka Goswami, an Oxford alumna and Founder of Nimaipathshala.
Drawing on the timeless teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, Srimati Renuka Goswami offered practical insight into how ancient wisdom can guide us through the pressures and complexities of modern life. Her talk was thoughtful, accessible, and deeply relevant — helping devotees reflect on duty, clarity of purpose, and spiritual steadiness in everyday living.
She also elaborated on the importance of sanskar — the values, habits, and cultural foundations that shape character from childhood onwards. In today's fast-changing world, she reminded the gathering that preserving and nurturing sanskar within families and communities is essential for building lives rooted in dharma, respect, and inner strength.
The evening was warmly received, with devotees appreciating both the depth of the subject and the speaker's ability to connect scriptural teaching to real-life experience. We are grateful to Srimati Renuka Goswami for sharing her knowledge and inspiration with our community.

Vara Mahalakshmi vrat celebrated over three days
One of the highlights of August was the celebration of Vara Mahalakshmi vrat at Oxford Hindu Mandir, observed over three days with devotion, prayer, and collective participation from devotees and families.
Vara Mahalakshmi vrat is traditionally observed in honour of Goddess Lakshmi, seeking Her blessings for prosperity, wellbeing, and harmony within the home and community. The mandir provided a sacred setting where devotees could come together to observe the vrat with sincerity and shared spiritual purpose.
A beautiful feature of the celebrations was the samuhika chanting of Lakshmi Ashtottara by devotees, followed by kumkuma archane. The collective recitation created an atmosphere of devotion and unity, as families joined in offering prayers and participating in this cherished tradition.
We thank all devotees who helped prepare, supported the arrangements, and took part in the observances. The three-day programme was a meaningful expression of bhakti and community togetherness.

A special vigil for Nepal flood relief
In a spirit of compassion and solidarity, Oxford Hindu Mandir organised a special vigil on Monday 31 August 2026 in support of communities affected by the devastating floods in Nepal.
Entitled A Special Vigil — Support Nepal During These Difficult Times, the evening brought devotees and well-wishers together for prayer, reflection, and collective support for ongoing relief efforts. The event was organised by Oxford Hindu Temple in partnership with Help for Nepal and Nepalese Community Oxfordshire (NCO).
The floods caused widespread hardship, displacement, and loss for many families across Nepal. Moved by their suffering, our community gathered at the mandir to stand in solidarity — offering prayers, raising awareness, and contributing towards practical relief for those in need.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, contributed, and helped make the vigil possible. Seva of this kind reflects one of the highest values of our tradition — reaching out across borders with generosity, humility, and care.
May those affected find strength, safety, and recovery in the days ahead. We continue to hold them in our prayers.

Upcoming event: Shree Krishna Janmashtami
We are delighted to invite devotees to join us for Shree Krishna Janmashtami at Oxford Hindu Mandir — a blessed evening celebrating the divine birth of Bhagwan Shree Krishna.
Janmashtami is one of the most joyous festivals in the Hindu calendar, bringing together families, children, and devotees for worship, bhajan, katha, and shared celebration. All are warmly welcome to take part in this uplifting programme at Court Farm Place.

Upcoming: Hartalika Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi
We will also be celebrating Hartalika Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi at Oxford Hindu Mandir on Monday 14 September 2026.
Hartalika Teej is traditionally observed with prayer and devotion, while Ganesh Chaturthi marks the joyous arrival of Lord Ganesha — both festivals hold a cherished place in the devotional calendar and bring families together in worship and celebration.
Timings and full programme details will be confirmed shortly. Please look out for announcements on our website, WhatsApp community, and Facebook page.
Steady rhythm of worship continues
Alongside these special programmes, August continued the mandir's established pattern of daily evening aaratis, welcoming devotees for prayer, chanting, and shared devotion.
The monthly havan on the second Sunday and Ayyappa pooja on the third Saturday also continued to draw regular participation, helping sustain the spiritual life of the community through the sacred month of Sawan.

With gratitude
We thank every devotee, volunteer, donor, and visitor who has helped make Oxford Hindu Mandir a vibrant spiritual home for our community.
May the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Shiva, and all the deities of the mandir continue to guide and inspire us in the months ahead.
