Oxford Hindu Mandir & Community Centre is committed to safeguarding children, young people, and vulnerable adults who take part in Mandir activities, including worship, festivals, classes, and volunteering.
Our commitment
Everyone has the right to feel safe at the Mandir. We take seriously any concern about harm, abuse, neglect, or inappropriate behaviour. Trustees and coordinators work to create a welcoming environment where concerns can be raised.
Who this policy covers
- children and young people attending Mandir activities;
- volunteers under 18 and their parents or guardians;
- adults who may be vulnerable because of age, disability, or circumstance;
- volunteers, visitors, and those leading activities.
Volunteers and young people
Volunteers under 18 must have parent or guardian consent. Some roles may not be suitable for younger volunteers. Coordinators should ensure appropriate supervision and clear boundaries. See our Volunteer policy.
Reporting concerns
If you are worried about a child, young person, or vulnerable adult — or about someone's behaviour at the Mandir — please speak up as soon as possible.
- contact a trustee or volunteer coordinator in person if it is safe to do so;
- email info@oxfordhindutemple.org with “Safeguarding” in the subject line;
- if someone is in immediate danger, call 999;
- for non-emergency police advice, call 101.
We will treat reports seriously, confidentially where possible, and in line with our legal duties. We may need to share information with statutory agencies such as the police or local authority where required.
Safer recruitment and training
Where roles involve regular contact with children or vulnerable adults, we may ask for references, training, or appropriate checks (such as DBS checks in England and Wales) in line with charity guidance and the nature of the role.
Photography and online sharing
Extra care applies when photographing or sharing images of children. See our Photography & communications policy.
Data protection
Safeguarding records are handled carefully and only shared on a need-to-know basis. See our Privacy policy.
Review
Trustees review this policy periodically and may appoint a safeguarding lead or adopt more detailed procedures as the Mandir grows.
