What to expect when volunteering at Oxford Hindu Mandir.

This policy describes how volunteering works at Oxford Hindu Mandir & Community Centre. It applies to anyone who registers interest through our website or otherwise offers their time in seva at the Mandir.

What volunteering means

Volunteering at Oxford Hindu Mandir is unpaid. Volunteers support worship, festivals, community activities, and the day-to-day running of the Mandir. Roles vary in time commitment, skills required, and training needed.

Registering your interest

Complete the volunteer registration form with accurate information. Registration records your interest only — it does not guarantee a particular role or create an employment relationship.

A volunteer coordinator may contact you about suitable opportunities, induction, and any training required for your chosen activities.

Eligibility

  • You must have the legal right to volunteer in the UK where immigration rules apply to your situation.
  • Volunteers under 18 need consent from a parent or guardian.
  • Some roles may require additional checks or training (for example safeguarding awareness or health and safety).

Conduct and expectations

We expect volunteers to:

  • treat visitors, worshippers, staff, and other volunteers with respect;
  • follow the Mandir's code of conduct, health and safety guidance, and instructions from coordinators;
  • dress and behave appropriately for a place of worship;
  • report concerns about safety or safeguarding promptly.

We may decline or end a volunteering arrangement if conduct is inappropriate or puts others at risk.

Health, safety, and medical information

You may share medical or accessibility information on the registration form to help us support you safely. This is optional unless needed for a specific role. We handle it in line with our Privacy policy.

Communication

We may contact you by email, phone, or WhatsApp according to your preferences. Joining volunteer WhatsApp groups is optional. See our Photography & communications policy for how we use images and messages.

Safeguarding

Protecting children and vulnerable adults is central to how we run volunteering. Read our Safeguarding policy.

Ending volunteering

You may stop volunteering at any time. Please let your coordinator know so we can update records and rotas. We may also ask volunteers to step back from a role if circumstances change.
